Our journey begins at Katsuoji Temple, set in the mountains of northern Osaka. Known for its thousands of Daruma dolls symbolizing perseverance and success, the temple has long been a place where visitors come to set goals and reflect on personal milestones. As we explore the grounds, you’ll see Daruma placed throughout the gardens, bridges, and pathways — each one marking a wish or achievement.

Our guides live in Osaka and have visited Katsuoji Temple hundreds of times and bring deep familiarity with its history, symbolism, and seasonal changes — offering context and insight that goes far beyond a casual visit.

You’ll also have the opportunity to purchase your own Daruma doll. Traditionally, one eye is filled in when setting a goal, and the second is completed once that goal is achieved. Whether chosen as a personal keepsake or a meaningful gift, it’s a tangible reminder of your time at Katsuoji and the spirit of determination the temple represents.

Beyond the Daruma tradition, Katsuoji itself is worth exploring for its history and setting. With origins tracing back to the Nara period, the temple grounds feature seasonal flowers, landscaped gardens, a central pond, and traditional architecture framed by mountain scenery.

After visiting Katsuoji, we make our way to Minoh Park and begin our walk toward Minoh Falls. Due to limited direct transport between these two mountain areas, we use a short local taxi transfer before beginning our forest walk. The riverside trail winds through forested paths lined with maple trees and small local snack stands — including vendors selling the area’s famous deep-fried maple leaves. Along the way, we may also encounter wild monkeys that inhabit the park.

At the 33-metre waterfall, we’ll take time to relax and enjoy lunch. The sound of cascading water and the surrounding forest make it a memorable stopping point before we continue our walk through the park.

Following the waterfall visit, we continue along the forest trail toward Ryuanji Temple, a quiet mountainside temple tucked into the hills of Minoh. Less visited than Katsuoji Temple, it offers a more intimate atmosphere and a chance to reflect on the area’s long spiritual connection to nature before we make our way back to the station. The route offers a steady mix of nature, light hiking, and cultural context — an active yet accessible way to experience one of Osaka’s most scenic areas.

We conclude by traveling back to Osaka Station, bringing the day full circle from city streets to mountain paths.

Itinerary

09:20: Meet your guide at Akatsuki Square (暁の広場) inside JR Osaka Station. After a short introduction, we travel by train and local bus into the peaceful mountains of northern Osaka.
10:45: Arrive at Katsuoji, the famous “Daruma Temple.” Wander the expansive grounds filled with thousands of Daruma dolls, learn the meaning behind these symbols of perseverance and good fortune, and enjoy time to explore the gardens and traditional architecture.
13:00: From Katsuoji, we take a short local taxi ride (approximately 10 minutes) to reach Minoh Park. From there, begin a scenic forest walk to the 33-meter Minoh Falls. Along the way, pass small local snack stalls — including the famous deep-fried maple leaf treats — and keep an eye out for wild monkeys in the trees. Enjoy free time for lunch near the waterfall.
14:00: Walk back along the peaceful forest trail, stopping at scenic viewpoints and quiet stretches of nature. Along the way, we also visit Ryuanji Temple, a small mountainside temple that adds another layer of history and atmosphere to the afternoon before returning toward Osaka.
16:00: Arrive back at JR Osaka Station, where your guide will say farewell and offer recommendations for the rest of your evening.
